Shipwreck kitsch: A chessboard

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Back in the day, the folks up in Alpena, Michigan made a lot of shipwreck kitsch. I’ve heard about more of it than I’ve seen, but this is by far the most beautiful beautiful piece of shipwreck kitsch I’ve ever come across. This solid chessboard is made of inlayed black walnut and maple salvaged from the cabin of steamer Pewabic. The photographs do not do it justice.

An inscription, penned on the bottom of the board reads:

To Mrs Chas. Dust

By Mr. J. B. labrase

Feb. 5th 1903

For more about the Pewabic see this earlier post or this. And many thanks to Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary for letting me see and photograph this fantastic piece.
